Reggae Artist Hed Redme Releases New EP Record “Inferiority Complex Girl”

Up-and-coming rub-a-dub kingpin Mississauga Hed Redme has struck his deepest groove on his 2012 EP album, “Inferiority Complex Girl,” new on John Lennon Records (SOCAN) Vg Lennon Records.

Up-and-coming rub-a-dub kingpin Mississauga Hed Redme has struck his deepest groove on his 2012 EP album, “Inferiority Complex Girl,” new on John Lennon Records (SOCAN) Vg Lennon Records. Hed writes and performs reggae music with a modern sound in the tradition of such groups as Burning Spear and Third World. His voice is rich and deep in a Barry White baritone, but his upbeat themes and motifs are more akin to the likes of Sam Cooke or Bob Marley. He is responsible for several releases to-date, including “We’re All Alone,” published in the August of 2005, as well as a twenty-two song compilation album on which he collaborated with various singer/songwriters published in October of 2008. His single, “We're All Alone,” has been played on Montreal radio and downloaded in the US, UK, Japan, and W.I. territories.

Hed performs vocals and guitar, as well as percussion, at live venues in Toronto, Canada, and Berkeley, California. He collaborates on a regular basis with such Toronto-based acts as Messanjah, Eddie Bullen, and Al Kussin. He has produced over one-hundred songs and published five albums. His titles include (but are not limited to) “Rock My Soul,” “You Are Changing,” “Saturday Night in Jamaica,” “Fantasy Love,” “Summer Nights,” and I'll Be There.” The video for his single, “My Dana,” is available for download at http://www.vglennonrecords.com. Though it may not seem possible to record so much music and still have more to give, Hed's storehouse of creativity shows no sign of dwindling. In fact, he is more prolific now than ever before, for which his fans are thankful.

With many fans of reggae thinking, “what has happened to traditional dub rhythm?” this EP serves as a wake-up call that Hed Redme has been a defender and powerful artist of Reggae music for many years and is continuing his musical crusade. Listeners do not have to travel to Canada, California, or Jamaica to hear him, however. Discovering his natural island rhythm is just an Internet search away.

Canadian Folk n' Roll Band the Plain Steel Releases First LP, “Folk n' Roll”

The Plain Steel, a rock/folk ensemble from Hamilton, Ontario, have released their first feature-length album, “Folk n' Roll,” on vinyl and digital media.
The Plain Steel, a rock/folk ensemble from Hamilton, Ontario, have released their first feature-length album, “Folk n' Roll,” on vinyl and digital media. The band is a quintet mainly comprised of percussion, electric guitar, violin, viola, and cello. Their raw groove is part rock n' roll, part North American folk music, resulting in an edgy sound that earnestly represents the modern culmination of traditional folk. Their drums are groovy and driving, their strings warm and jovial, accented with neither too much fiddle nor too much chamber-music classicism. Their bass and lead guitar work lies somewhere between Creedence Clearwater and the Beach Boys, which mix blends far more intuitively than one might suppose. Their vocals are natural and rich, precise yet unrefined, delivered with the tone and masculinity of a less gregarious Jim Morrison.

Lyrically, their themes are largely inspired by on-the-road experiences a-la Jack Kerouac, and the kind of Americana that has been fueling the folk experience since before it was called 'folk.' The motifs evoked by such artists as Joan Baez and Bob Dylan are certainly present in the Plain Steel's writing, but the seasoned listener will also hear the more rock-engendered psychadelia of Pink Floyd, and the steel-sledgehammer tonalities of the Rolling Stones. The Plain Steel has less obvious undercurrents similar to the forest-wandering anthems of Nick Drake, too, as well as an authenticity like that of famous Maine maritime traditionalists, Schooner Fare. In short, the Plain Steel has something for any music fan with a penchant for legitimate folk music and a love of rock n' roll.

The Plain Steel have existed since 1999 in various incarnations. They have at times been a studio project, a trio, and a quartet, among other lineups. As an independent group of musicians composing, producing, manufacturing and distributing their releases without the direction of mainstream music businessmen, their unique sound stands absolutely unadulterated by industry producers or engineers, the way true folk music has always been.

The Plain Steel's premiere LP, “Folk n’ Roll,” will both assert their prominence in the thrumming Canadian independent music scene and showcase their innovative style to be appreciated abroad. “Folk ‘n’ Roll” is currently available on black or limited-edition clear vinyl at Hammer City Records (Hamilton, ON) as well as for downloading via iTunes, similar services online. San Diego Pop Punk Band Madison Falls Releases First LP, “Something To Show For”

Madison Falls, a pop punk ensemble from San Diego, CA, has released their first full-length record, “Something To Show For.”
Madison Falls, a pop punk ensemble from San Diego, CA, has released their first full-length record, “Something To Show For.” The music is extremely upbeat, melodic, and reminiscent of early Green Day, Blink 182, and longtime indie-music favorite, Lifetime. The vocals are bright and clarion, the guitar work charged and uncluttered, the drums snappy, crashy, and at a double time pace – just the way fans of pop punk like it. With this expertly practiced set recorded via crisp, masterful engineering, Madison Falls is ready to take music fans on a ride through the myriad experiences of suburban living.

The record sports nine full-length tracks; seven of these are whimsical, positive, and full of youth and verve, while the remaining two are pensive acoustic tracks providing pause. Lyrically speaking, lead vocalist Joey Cortijo concerns himself with many themes Southern Californian punk rock singers have been singing about for thirty years including: the nice-guys-finish-last maxim; a wistful she's-out-of-my-league confession; the technology-is-no-substitute-for-nature principle; and admiration for a character-over-material-possessions philosophy. Naturally, these are fairly involved topics for conversation, yet Madison Falls captures and relates the simple truths with high energy, discoursing passionately and having a great time doing so. Like many good artists, Madison Falls also open their hearts sharing more personal dialogue, and even when they're dishing on the death of a close friend, or the difficulties involved with breaking old habits for new adventures, their impetuous, uplifting surges of optimism never fail to encourage.

22-year-old California native Cortijo honed his craft in various Arizona and California bands over the last five years, but is now teamed with MAXIOM LLC label owner Tony Steele. With the combination showing obvious talent, chemistry and a penchant for fun, it's safe to say that “Something To Show For” will only be the first of many Madison Falls productions.

Shade Makes Burban Music Mainstream With New EP, “The Time Is Now...”

Seattle burban music artist Shade has released his standout, breakaway new EP, “The Time Is Now...” to much-deserved critical acclaim.

Seattle burban music artist Shade has released his standout, breakaway new EP, “The Time Is Now...” to much-deserved critical acclaim. In one fell swoop, Shade has made himself impossible to ignore as an artist. The EP is classy, well-orchestrated, and lyrically ingenious. His beats are heavy, the rhythms funky, and his rhymes land like intensely premeditated verse. In his own words Shade says of himself, “I speak the truth, so call me Howard Zinn – I'm not a coward yet” (from his track “8-Count”).

Shade's music blends orthodox urban hip-hop with Urdu and Hindi culture. The result is a music that is more intelligent, colorful, and imaginative than the American music industry's army of Kanye wanna-bes and P-Diddy knockoffs. His extended-play album utilizes live instrumentation, measured amounts of effects, and depends largely on Shade's talent as a rapper and writer. That his writing forms much of the power and passion in his music is appropriate, too, because as a musician who chose to postpone his music career to graduate from Washington State University, Shade's music is partially the product of a refined education. His hip-hop, dance, pop, and R&B numbers are each effective in their own rights, and in none of them does he fall short of excellence behind the others.

Wiki defines burban as “a musical subculture (standing for "brown-urban") and an attempt to unify urban musicians of Asian descent.” The burban genre includes performers such as The Truth, Raxstar, and Shizzio, but now crowns itself with the up-and-coming class act that is Shade. Shade's music videos for “Feel the Pressure” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkFZo7K0Mmg) and “The Flame” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wxnUymFxw0) make it painfully obvious that Burban music in general -- and Shade very much in particular -- have been overlooked for far too long by fans of the hip-hop and R&B genres. With his groundbreaking EP, “The Time Is Now...” though, Shade is certain to attract all the spotlights urban music has in tow. The time is now, indeed.

Texas Old-School Rap Artist Pimp TYT Releases New Single “Tell 'Em”

Pimp TYT, an old-school rapper from Texas, has returned to the music scene with his breakout new single, “Tell 'Em”
Pimp TYT, an old-school rapper from Texas, has returned to the music scene with his breakout new single, “Tell 'Em.” Tyt's music is a new, refreshing spin on the classic late-eighties hip-hop groove with an emphasis on sharp rhymes and pimp culture. His voice is strong and emphatic, his rhetoric and wordplay witty and clever. His back beats intertwine with funky bass riffs and big, bold brass, but his most striking characteristic is perhaps his backing female vocals, which are sterling-perfect and orchestrated in the disco-esque style that prevailed in the late 80's and early 90's. In this era of mostly illiterate, rhythm-less radio pop, Pimp Tyt is almost certainly what modern hip-hop listeners have been missing for so long.

Tyt, who was originally known in the Texas scene as 30 OT 6, has opened for such mainstream acts as Wu Tang Clan, Ghostface Killah, Run DMC, Robb Bass, and Digital Underground, among others. He has been rapping onstage since 1992, but took a hiatus out of artistic frustration after deciding his circumstances were unsuitable for his music to meet his high personal standards. Upon reasserting himself in the scene, Tyt's signature sound immediately caught the attention of music fans and promoters alike. His distinctive “dirty Texas funk hip-hop” tone is inimitable, a shining attribute that distinguishes him apart from the often-homogenous blur of underground rap and hip-hop today.

Pimp Tyt grew up in 1970's Southern California. He is the son of an Italian mother and Jamaican father, both of whom were in “the business.” Of this he has said that music became for him an outlet, the form of artistic expression he used to voice his “childhood animosity, anger, and uncertainty of growing up with nothing.” We can be glad it did, too, because without his checkered past the hip-hop world might have had to do without Tyt's one-of-a-kind style, and in an industry inundated more and more with the same-old gangsta swagger and second-rate, autotuned vocals, that would be a crying shame.

Texas Artist DJ Phillyphil Releases New EP Record, “Mind of a Dreamer”

DJ Phillyphil, a contemporary hip-hop artist originally from Houston, Texas, has released his first EP Record, “Mind of a Dreamer,” on MondoTunes Distribution

DJ Phillyphil, contemporary hip-hop artist originally from Houston, Texas, has released his first EP Record, “Mind of a Dreamer,” on MondoTunes Distribution. The record, released on August 14th of this year, includes three brand-new original tracks, “Back to Reality,” “Bounce That,” and “Live My Dream,” the last of which features Philly's cohort and collaborator, Sky P. These tracks feature state-of-the-art composition, old-school back beats, and some of the most heartfelt rhymes this side of New York City.

His lyrics come rapid-fire, cleanly enunciated, and spoken with a confidence and style rarely seen in the modern hip-hop scene. His melody lines hearken back to the late eighties and early nineties, when groove and funk were more important than sounding like the theme song from a bad horror movie, and where groove and funk are concerned, Philly has more of both in one knuckle of his little finger than most of what passes for hip-hop music on the radio today.

DJ Phillyphil is perhaps best known for his spin jockey work at Texas hot spot, the Jolly Fox Night Club. The famous Jolly Fox is operated by scene giant, George Spentzos, big-time promoter for hundreds of country/western performers including the Eli Young Band, who made their fame playing at this venue of venues. Still, though his work on wax at the Jolly Fox has garned DJ Philly more than a little attention in the midwest, as well as many views worldwide online, his own fame may precede him as an up-and-coming actor from ABC's The Lying Game and Russell National Athletics commercial work.

Needless to say, his current artistic emphasis is on his abilities at the turntable and mic, and this recent extended play release on MondoTunes Distribution stands as a monument to his prominent potential as a hip-hop artist and composer of R&B music.

South Florida Modern Reggae Artist Apoc Releases First LP, “Silver and Gold”

Modern reggae artist from South Florida, Apoc, has released his flagship LP “Silver and Gold” on Black Circle Records.

Apoc's music is heavy-hitting, genuine reggae for the year 2012 and beyond. In this time of self-doubt regarding politics, peaceful global interaction, and the reggae genre itself, Apoc's first release is a godsend. With meaningful, well-written lyrics, a solid rocksteady back beat and heartfelt vocals that come straight from the soul, Apoc's “Silver and Gold” just might be the stabilizing force that the music world (and the world itself) needs in these troubled years.

Having never released an official long-playing record before, Apoc's appearance on the scene is nothing short of exclamatory. His rhymes are razor-sharp, his beats more solid than a concrete wall. His themes span the distance between foreign affairs and affairs at home, poverty, greed, war, brotherhood, political personalities, nuclear proliferation, music trends, and much, much more. He does not censor himself, and stands as one of reggae's most powerful advocates of free speech at this time.

When will the poor people, them, get relief? Long time our people and city under seige,” he reminds the leaders of planet Earth. Perhaps Apoc's most powerful attribute will prove to be his peace-mongering, honest care for the people of the world, which shows heavily in his lyrics and emphases. His groove, however, is what his fans will clamor for when all is said and done, his melodies and beats being just as harmonious as those of Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer or Burning Spear, all of whom – it should be noted – also cared deeply for the state of humanity.

Apoc has performed in ninety-five percent of the states in the Union, and shows no sign of letting up.

Ska/Reggae Legends Sly and Robbie Release Newest Album, “New Legend – Jamaica 50th Edition”

Legendary ska/reggae innovators Sly and Robbie have gathered an all-star cast for their 2012 album, “New Legend – Jamaica 50th Edition.”
Legendary ska/reggae godfathers Sly and Robbie have gathered an all-star cast for their 2012 album, “New Legend – Jamaica 50th Edition.” Sly and Robbie have called this new all-star team of professional musicians the Jam Masters, a truly fitting name for a crew including the finest musicians Jamaica has ever seen on one project: Sly Dunbar on live drums, Robbie Shakespeare on bass guitar, Earl "Chinna" Smith on guitar, and Robbie Lyn on keyboards. Vocals for the album are stunningly supplied by Nioma, winner of Magnum King & Queen of Dancehall 2011. “New Legend – Jamaica 50th Edition” includes 10 original tracks, 4 of them instrumental, and is an early standout favorite for this year's Best Reggae Album Grammy Award.

Sly & Robbie + the Jam Masters (as they are billed) have stated that their collective intent with this album is to present authentic, Jamaican reggae music to the world, a lofty goal with no one better-suited to the task. With many detractors wondering what has happened to the original Jamaican groove, this album serves as a timely reminder that Sly & Robbie have been innovators and gatekeepers of Reggae music for 4 decades. This 2012 release stands as proof that they are as relevant today as when they started in the 70s.
If you are curious who Sly & Robbie are, their historic rise to prominence in the chronicles of reggae, ska, and rocksteady music is well-documented on hundreds of fan and news websites all over the worldwide web. After all, they may well be the most prolific recording artists ever, with one staggering estimate declaring that they have played on or produced around 200,000 songs. Discovering their titanic groove is just an Internet search away.
The set will be in 100 countries across 750 digital distribution stores.

Ft. Lauderdale Hip Hop Producer Musclebeatz Releases Powerhouse Collection “Musclebeatz Presents: Flex With Me Vol.1”

Heavy-hitting hip hop music producer from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, has released his first collection of work, entitled, “Musclebeatz Presents: Flex With Me Vol.1.”

Heavy-hitting hip hop music producer from Ft. Lauderdale, FL, has released his first collection of work, entitled, “Musclebeatz Presents: Flex With Me Vol.1.” The collection spans 10 powerhouse tracks of the heaviest, funkiest beats in the urban music underworld today, and features such collaborators as Nomaad, GunSt8_N8, Casino Luchi and Tsu Nitti. These tracks are hard, sharp-cracking, classic, chock-full of unstoppable funk and absolutely refreshing to hear at a time when the radio is dominated by watered-down, insipid “bling” rap.

Muscle originated as a rapper, himself, but the solid wall of groove he has built as a producer stands six-miles-tall as evidence of his sheer genius on wax. His beats lay back, then slam out rat-a-tat, like drumsticks breaking bones. There's enough space between each thump of the bass and snap of the snare to fit all the grind a promoter can fit onto a club's dance floor. Each track is entirely unique in its own right, the only similarities between them being honest, raw, old-school quality and unrelenting, sheer power. Muscle himself, in other words, is very appropriately named.

Muscle's collaborating artists, each and all of them, are individually poets in their own right. Their rhymes are straight-up, intelligent, tough as railroad spikes and sharp as busted glass. The combination of these excellent wordsmith/vocalists and Musclebeatz is a sound both reminiscent of old favorites such as Rick Ross and inspired by new blood like Kanye. Muscle's bass is deeper than Mos Def's, his compositions classier than Towa Tei's (Japan), his integrity as bulletproof as Tupac Shakur's.

Music fans have much to be thankful for with this, the first (and certainly not the last) collection of runaway classics from Florida producer Musclebeatz. All ten tracks are positively indispensable, and stand as proof that this man has a long, many-storied career ahead of him. The only reasonable response upon the close of “Sex Machine” by Nomaad and Muscle, the last track on this record, is one of intense appreciation – and of course, the real question: when do we get Vol. 2, Muscle?

Patsy Trigg of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” Fame Releases New Single, “It's A Merry Christmas When Pigs Fly”

Acclaimed holiday music superstar Patsy Trigg, beloved creator of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” has released her new single entitled “It's A Merry Christmas When Pigs Fly” on Eight Little Pigs Publishing.

Acclaimed holiday music superstar Patsy Trigg, beloved creator of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” has released her new single entitled “It's A Merry Christmas When Pigs Fly” on Eight Little Pigs Publishing. This is her first major release since 2004's “Percy the Puny Poinsettia,” though she has not left the public eye since first climbing the charts in 1979. Trigg's music has been extremely popular for more than thirty years, and she remains the only musician especially known for seasonal music who can sell records in the dead of summer, six months away from Christmas.

It took until 1983 for Patsy's “Grandma Got Run Over...” to achieve Billboard Magazine's #1 rank, inheriting the long-held crown from Bing Crosby's “White Christmas” (Crosby's version is the Guinness Book's best-selling single of all time). Trigg's single held strong at Billboard's #1 for an additional five years. The track has not been displaced from the top ten since its '79 debut. It went RIAA Gold in 1989, and Patsy Trigg received her first RIAA Platinum Certification February 15, 1997.

While comedic lyrical content has arguably been the best-loved aspect of Trigg's recordings, her instrumentation and delivery are easily as soulful and genuine as classic hits by country/western artists such as Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, and Emma Lou Harris. Her guitar work is cadenced and unadorned, her tones clean-sounding and free from pretense. Anyone unfamiliar with her non-comedic work should give a listen to “Here's to the Lonely!” as evidence of her genius.

Patsy started performing at age 11 in Anchorage, AK. Her father was in the US Army, providing her with ample opportunities to perform in a wide variety of locales. She has performed all over the United States, in Canada, and in Europe. She has appeared in commercials for Hunt/Wesson, Land 'O Lakes, K-Mart, Orville Redenbacher, Toyota, and for Kellogg's during a Superbowl. She has been performing for over 50 years. Patsy now resides in the family house at Fayetteville, TN, where her father operated a music store and recording studio.

R&B Singer El DeBarge Jr. Releases First Solo EP, “The Lion's Den”

El DeBarge Jr., namesake of the famous Motown singer El DeBarge, has released his first solo EP album on Industry Family Entertainment/Entertainment District Records titled, “The Lion's Den.”
El DeBarge Jr., namesake of the famous Motown singer El DeBarge, has released his first solo EP album on Industry Family Entertainment / Entertainment District Records. The EP record is titled “The Lion's Den” and is a collection of original R&B and modern-soul tracks both written and performed by El DeBarge, Jr. “The Lion's Den” is an expertly executed, tastefully composed record that is sure to solidify young DeBarge as one of the year's most important up-and-coming R&B artists.

The main feature of the extended-play album is El DeBarge, Jr., himself. He is best classified as a singer, rather than merely a vocalist, a distinction that will set him apart from many modern performers of the R&B genre today. His voice and style are crisp, clean, and natural like his father's, though much more sonorous and soulful. His lyrical content tends mainly toward the romantic, though he has penned lines on several other topics in the past. His music has deep, snappy groove and tasteful melody lines. His rhythms take their cue from the best Motown artists of the late seventies and early eighties. While DeBarge Jr. definitely fits in with contemporary R&B singers such as Babyface or Chris Brown, he exudes a level of class and finesse more akin to Marvin Gaye, or even Al Green.

The “Lion's Den” EP is not his only recent activity, however, as he has also released a new video for his single, “Shawty R U OK.” The video, like the track itself, as well as the entirety of DeBarge's material, showcases DeBarge's professional-yet-unpretentious demeanor. The music video, which is expertly directed by Will J. Smith, shows that El is obviously ready for the global arena of sound and stage performance. R&B fans, El DeBarge Jr. fans, and new listeners alike are encouraged to see the complete music video here (and on myriad other music websites worldwide): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DV1Ugb8wHEY.

Their music has many of the best elements of the great metal bands of the late eighties and early nineties. It is more punch and charge than melody, and Guitarist Paul G. never strays too far from the headstock. Vocalist J. Bishop schizophrenically channels two personalities. One of these shouts frenetically with the angry pitch, repetition and phrasing of the 80s west coast punk vocalists, such as Casey Royer of D.I., while the other growls like Barney Greenway (Napalm Death) and madly addresses the audience like Dave Mustaine (Megadeth). Bass player TravisD. creates an atmosphere of insanity, too, with sniper precision and rapid, active movements on the neck of his guitar – which guitar, it must be noted, literally bleeds what appears to be living blood. To call their rhythm up-tempo would be saying far too little. Drummer Lowen H. is a human jackhammer with a double-kick style that sounds like a machine gun firing mortar shells.

Their stage performance, however, bares especial examination. Flanking the instrumentalists are the “Bio-Bastards:” Slink moves behind the retina-melting array of lights; Drab and Sploch are twin monsters who appear in a variety of personas to pantomime all that is destructive about humanity – just for fun. Sometimes they are the infected in hazmat outfits. Sometimes they are gas-masked freaks. Sometimes they are cleft-chinned, green army men. They play with fire, play with gore, play percussion on open, glowing drums of toxic waste, and sometimes wheel out an 8' anti-aircraft cannon to shoot a variety of mayhem upon the audience. I.D.S.F.A.'s stage show isn't the zany cartoon style of GWAR's nor the obnoxiousness of Insane Clown Posse's, though. It's raw, honest, adrenaline-fueled music with a lot of humor and a titanic amount of entertainment.

IDSFA will be at Sunset Blvd.'s world-famous Whisky A Go-Go on September 2, 2012 to celebrate their Official California CD Release Party. Guest list invitations are available for A&R representatives upon request. Please send requests to idsfaband@gmail.com

Up-and-Coming Hip Hop Artist Dlaurend Releases New LP

Miami hip-hop artist Dlaurend has released his newest collection of recordings on MondoTunes Music Distribution
Miami hip-hop artist Dlaurend has released his newest collection of recordings on MondoTunes Music Distribution. These tracks are heavy, yet smooth, and woven over a backbeat that just doesn't quit. Dlaurend pulls no stops, allows no quarter, gives no room for competition. He does not imitate, and his sound, which may even be too fine for the modern era's tin ear, is entirely unique to him.

D. Laurend Young started singing at the tender age of sixteen, and had already garnered the attention of the music industry in the Miami, Florida, area, which is a highly competitive and unforgiving hip hop scene. Nevertheless, the music of Dlaurend stands out against the usual backdrop of homogenous hip hop, a trait that has alienated him from major labels whom are too scared to release anything but the same-old, same-old. His music mixes the cool, harmonic sweetness of Boyz II Men with the groove of artists such as New Edition, and a subtler funk hearkening to Prince.

His loops are background music, not melodies, and his beats are rhythm, not the showing-off of a flashy percussionist. His music reminds one of the tasteful hip hop of the late eighties and early-mid nineties, when hip-hop hit a stride in its quality that stretched from the rawness of gangsta rap to the undeniable expertise found in performers like Seal and Brian McKnight. His sound is sonorous and soulful, executed with patience, precision and tact. His lyrics are heartfelt, honest, earnest, and natural. His lines are full of conviction and steadfastness. Upon being asked about the content of his lyrics, Dlaurend has said his music “reflects love, heartbreak and the celebrations of life.” These themes are perhaps his most permeating topics, but they are far from his only ones.

New Jersey Prog Rock Band Eternal Essence Releases Powerhouse LP “A Light in the Distance”

Following more than five years as an instrumental band, Jersey progressive-rock band Eternal Essence releases their first LP featuring lead vocals, “A Light in the Distance.”
Following more than five years as pure instrumentalists, Jersey progressive-rock band Eternal Essence releases their first LP featuring lead vocals, “A Light in the Distance.” With guitars that sometimes tear and sometimes caress, bass like a bulletproof suspension bridge, drums that cruise, groove, and kick holes in walls, and a vocalist that soars above the ocean of sound like a bird on the wing, Eternal Essence steps into the rock foreground as if to say, “Oh, that? Yeah, we've been that awesome for awhile now. Sorry to startle you.” It would seem that all of a sudden, the East Coast indie scene has an obscene amount of awesome to live up to.

Eternal Essence bills themselves as progressive rock in the vein of Dream Theater, Rush, and Pink Floyd. All the best qualities of these powerhouse bands are indeed present in their music. However, fans of hardcore music will immediately identify them with the high-octane sounds of the infant emo scene of the early nineteen-nineties, when east coast bands like Quicksand, and west coast groups like Farside (Revelation Records) were forsaking the insipid, sappy whining of grunge performers to make music that was heavy-hitting and honest, free of music-industry pretentiousness. Eternal Essence is a return to everything that was ever good about punk rock, all the expertise of heavy metal instrumentation, and the exacting values of painstakingly premeditated songwriting. In a word, E.E. is exactly what modern music has, literally, been dying without.

Not unlike the Washington D.C. band Ashes, they've taken on a female vocalist to front their carefully measured wall of sound (Maria Vastano). Her voice never quite lilts, never panders, never sounds dispassionate, like a statue of the virgin Mary amidst a raging battlefield. She knows when to stand in shadows, and when to strike for the kill. The guitars charge, they race, they let chains of notes fall like Spanish classical music. The bass, perfectly married to the kick drum, walks into melodies with an effortlessness that can't help but ridicule what passes for bass guitar on most radio stations today. The drums – ah, the drums! – of Eternal Essence are their proverbial backbone, laying back and providing support from behind, right up to the crucial moment when they sharpen up to a staccato machine gun of head-rapping ecstasy, firing volley after volley of beautiful violence, carefully measured and white-knuckled in their triumphant lack of mercy. Plenty of drummers idolize Neil Peart of Rush, but the Peart-like percussion of Eternal Essence practices and does not preach.

There are crystalline keyboards, clean-channel strings, crashing cymbals like toppling walls... But the important thing is that the nation of music fans know: Eternal Essence is here, and they have a new album.
