R 'n' B group MarLewTown releases new EP 'They Call Us'

The R 'n' B music group from Palm Beach County, FL known as MarLewTown is releasing their newest EP album on MommaMac Enterprise records, titled, “They Call Us.” The album comprises the most official representation of the band published worldwide, and contains some of the most impressive writing and performing the artists have recorded to date.

“This EP is an introduction to MarLewTown,” the band writes. “We want everyone to share our vibrational energy and connect with us on all levels through our music.”

This connection is instantly felt upon listening to the record the first time through. Partially orchestrated and sung in the style of traditional, Motown-style rhythm and blues, MarLewTown's EP is infused with the best qualities of classic acts such as The Temptations and The Four Tops, but fortified also with the confidence and aggression of more modern artists such as Beyonce, R. Kelly, and Kanye West. The result of this atypical mix is a combination of old-school class and explosive, contemporary swagger that is thrilling, arresting, and immediately enjoyable as soon as one hits 'play.'

“We are very eclectic in nature and appreciate all forms of music,” writes MarLewTown of their unique style on “They Call Us.”

The MarLewTown trio are a crew of siblings, whose stage monikers, “The Coldest,” “The Most,” and “The Fire” correspond to brothers Mello T. and Silva C., and to sister Woosie Kat, respectively. As their new EP clearly demonstrates, each of them is capable of singing and rapping without hesitation or flaw, and their writing exceeds the quality of modern music by a good clip.

“They say it's 50/50 in relationships,” sings chanteuse Woosie Kat in their single, “50/50;” “I don't want in if half is all I get,” the line goes. Coming in with a gorgeous three-part harmony, the chorus continues, “I want more you. Half the effort just won't do.”

Artists of exceptional taste and musical capacity, MarLewTown's seemingly endless talent goes all the way to the bone.

“We have been groomed from the womb,” they say of this. “Music runs through our veins.”

MarLewTown's EP “They Call Us” is available online worldwide beginning April 1, 2013.

Worldwide release of rap single 'Wut Chu Gone Do Fo A Hunnit?' by Romeo Stone announced

Rapper Romeo Stone has released his latest hip-hop single, titled, “Wut Chu Gone Do Fo A Hunnit?” on Curb to Castle Records (stylized Curb 2 Ca$tle). The single is a rap anthem and music video that features Romeo Stone himself (also often stylized as Romeo $tone) as the star performer, as well as fellow Curb to Castle friends, M.A.D.E. and Joe Davis. The video is now available for viewing on Vimeo as well as other popular online outlets.

The single itself is a Romeo Stone (AKA Rome E. Rome) original, who writes his own music, sometimes in collaboration with other artists. The themes of “Wut Chu Gone Do Fo A Hunnit?” are indicative of the hip hop and street lifestyle, regarding the leisurely pursuits of women, cash, and a clutch of Mary Jane. It bears all the slamming, thumping hallmarks of traditional hip hop music, as well as many of the cutting-edge attributes of more contemporary music from the urban underground. Romeo Stone's beats are heavy, his musical accompaniment catchy and full of rhythm and groove, and he spits his rhymes at a pace only true professionals are capable of delivering with the same precision.

This will not come as a surprise to listeners familiar with Stone's work. Raised in the hip-hop metropolis of Compton, in the same generation and locale which gave rise to godfathers of rap N.W.A., Romeo Stone has worked with industry giants like El Debarge, Johnny J (producer of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smallz), and Kenny McCloud (Bone Thugs 'n' Harmony, Guru, Easy-E) among a slough of others. He names as his most important musical influences the likes of legends such as Ludacris, Lil' Wayne, Drake, Kidd Inc., and Big Sean.

When asked about the message his new single has for fans, Romeo Stone says simply, “Time to hit the dance floor!” which his song has no problem communicating whatsoever.

He is the founder of Curb to Castle Records and is currently at work preparing his upcoming LP hip-hop album, “Greatest Story Neva Told.”

Wut Chu Gone Do Fo A Hunnit?” by Romeo Stone is available online worldwide beginning April 1, 2013.

Cnote of Bloods and Crips fame releases solo single 'F. U. Industry N-ggas'

Cnote, who gained international fame with her wildly controversial band, Bloods and Crips, has released her latest solo rap single, titled, “F. U. Industry N-ggas” on the Salute the West record label. The song is an enraged, yet intelligent indictment of the American corporate music industry, which has been under fire as early as the 1960s for taking advantage of musicians, censoring or blacklisting artists, and for practicing unethical marketing strategies across all genres of music.

In “F. U. Industry N-ggas,” Cnote's voice and fists are raised against fat-cat music industry businessmen in support of all artists, as well as for the music listening public. Musically speaking, her single also raises several modern hip hop standards. “F. U. Industry N-ggas” is no thrown-together project, but rather a work of courageous and home-hitting artistic integrity.

Cnote (AKA Danny Gyrl) is a true poet of the urban underground, each of her lines and rhymes being crafted with the greatest skill and utmost honesty. Her words cut like jagged glass, her chorus pounds like 50-caliber shells from a battleship, each shot aimed directly at the top of the corporate ladder. The back beat is driving and full of groove, yet unobtrusive, the way rap used to be. Enjoining Cnote is a steady, vibrant electric guitar playing licks hotter than the surface of the sun.

Cnote's musical history is storied and braided with music history, itself, her experience with Bloods and Crips cementing her in the chronicles of the underground rap movement. The legendary band was assembled by producer Ronnie Phillips with rappers Redrum 781 and Tweedy Bird Loc in 1993. This seminal rap band, composed of actual inner-city gang members, released two Billboard-charting albums of what would soon come to be called “gangsta” rap. Many of its members are now deceased, and Cnote's own death was rumored.

This forms part of the impetus for her founding an independent record label, Salute the West. The rest of the inspiration comes from a genuine, inborn desire to hit the Man back, and to hit him hard. Reprinted here in its entirety is the declaration of war in Cnote's own words:

“The single was written for artists who have had their dreams stolen by someone in the entertainment business, for anyone used, mistreated, blackballed, walked on, or sexually harassed by anyone in the music business. I wanted to give them a voice through this song. I've heard a lot of bad stories about stolen dreams, and I may not be able to help those [victims] fulfill them, but I can give them a voice through my songs.”

And as for the music, itself? “As for the album, it will be a street album,” she writes.

Indeed, it will – and it will bang on wax, as the famous Bloods and Crips song goes.

The single “F. U. Industry N-ggas” is available online worldwide beginning late March, 2013.

Cnote's performances in Bloods and Crips official music videos are also available for viewing online. Her YouTube channel is available at MissCnoteDannygyrl (see especially, “Steady Dippin”).

Composer Jennifer Theuer Ruzicka releases “Earth Sky” LP

The pianist and composer from St. Paul known as Jennifer Theuer Ruzicka has re-released her 2012 LP record album, “Earth Sky,” on Alchymie records. The album contains eight original tracks over approximately 30 minutes of gorgeous, instrumental music composed entirely by Ruzicka, herself. It is mastered by Chris Graham.

“Earth Sky” is primarily focused on piano, but has elements of ambient and experimental electronica, also. These digital attributes serve to blend Ruzicka's piano pieces into one cohesive, organic whole, adding contour and abstract shape for a listening experience that is full and lush, like nature, itself. Ruzicka's tone is evenly divided throughout the sonic spectrum, sometimes warm, sometimes cool, but always consistently pleasant, vibrant and alive.

The biotic atmosphere of “Earth Sky” is not accidental. Ruzicka, herself, calls her LP an ambient, meditative project that is based on the visual, emotional and sensory experience that both the earth and the sky can impart.

Through music,” she writes, “we are able to experience the interconnectedness of our earth, our sky, our senses and perhaps ourselves.”

Each of the eight tracks on “Earth Sky” are representative of a natural segment of earth or sky. In order, they are named in Czech (here translated): “Sunrise,” “Clouds,” “Rapeseed,” “Trees,” “Water,” “Poppies,” “Sunset,” and “Stars.” These compositions flow into one another exactly like seasons intertwining, or like the light of the sun passing over the eternally revolving globe. The music of “Sunrise” resonates gradually into a crescendo that welcomes the listener to the rest of the album, while “Sunset” fades into calm like the slowing of a child's music box, until the sonic space that is left ushers in Ruzicka's final piece, appropriately titled, “Stars.” The sheer majesty of this finale is not unlike that of the stars, themselves, and like the return of spring after annual snowfall, the listener will almost certainly want to begin the record anew from Track 1 at its placid conclusion.

Ruzicka has played and toured for independent and major label artists in the USA and in Europe, such as international R&B recording artist Alexander O’Neal, Paisley Park recording artist David “T.C.” Ellis, and Mallia “The Queen of Funk” Franklin, from the original Brides of Funkenstein. She has also performed with legendary Czech artists such as Pavel Bobek, Ilona Csakova, Karel Sucha, Helena Vondrackova, and the well-known alt-rock jazz group, Laura a jeji tygri (Laura and Her Tigers). She continues to collaborate with artists from the USA, Czech Republic, and England.

She Said Fire releases new single, 'Funhouse'

The powerhouse rock band from Brooklyn known as She Said Fire has released their newest single, titled, “Funhouse.” The single is an excellent example of what the East Coast has come to love about She Said Fire, being full of the same energy and aggressive creativity that they have been associated with since their inception. It showcases the unrestrained talents of all four band members, giving old fans and new listeners alike a window on what is sure to be remembered as their formative release, the upcoming She Said Fire EP.

She Said Fire is predominately a contemporary rock band with some pop and post-emo elements. Their style exemplifies a full, lush sound that is exceedingly dynamic, and surprisingly deep in timbre for a four-piece band with a dedicated vocalist and just one guitar. The She Said Fire tone marries intelligent, complex chord structures and active, precise bass lines to the explosive and intuitive performances of their drummer and singer. Vocalist Joshua Hawksley sings with the verve and passion of a young Axl Rose, blended with the rasping drawl of Tom Waits and the delivery of Dave Grohl. The character of the band is altogether unpretentious and fun-loving, yet ingenious with an abundance of artistic integrity.

She Said Fire is the reborn incarnation of NYC-based rock band, The August Infinity, which was comprised of the aforementioned Hawksley, Peter Strzelecki and Chris Moss, and whose “To Whom It May Concern” EP was received with such enthusiasm and anticipation. The addition of Christina Vitucci on drums catalyzed the band and led to the development of the sound encapsulated in “Funhouse,” and the band rechristened themselves as She Said Fire. SSF completed the production of their forthcoming EP through a Kickstarter campaign that successfully ended in early February, and with an excess funding of 15% to boot. Hawksley and Strzelecki can be seen performing a soulful, bluesy acoustic version of “Funhouse” online.

“Funhouse” by She Said Fire is available on iTunes and elsewhere worldwide online beginning March 26, 2013.

Valerie Nichol releases new single “Number One Fan”

The Georgia songbird known as Valerie Nichol has released her newest single, titled, “Number One Fan.” The song is an original hip hop romance ballad in the style of Chante Moore, and features the stunningly delicate and precise singing of Nichol, herself. It is the premier publication of Nichol on the MondoTunes worldwide distribution network. On global pop music charts, her song has placed in the top 14 percent of 2.2 million music artists, making her one of Earth's most popular musicians, as well as one of her most talented. An accompanying music video for “Number One Fan” is also available for viewing online.

Valerie Nichol hails from the beautiful sylvan landscape of Austell, GA, where she dedicates herself to creating music whenever she can find the time. While “Number One Fan” denotes her most prominent release to date, it is only the latest in her growing collection of songs.

“I love writing and singing,” she says. “When I'm stressed, I go to the studio and I forget all that's negative.” Concerning the amorous themes of “Number One Fan,” Nichol relates simply, “It shares passion and love!”

She names as artistic influences the legendary likes of Mariah Carey, Chante Moore, and Beyonce, all of whom share splendid and sonorous attributes with the sultry chanteuse from Georgia. She hasn't let all the recent attention go to her head, though. She writes regarding her newfound fame:

“I have waited all my life for this great opportunity, and for it I am grateful!”

She also has a short but heartfelt message for her listeners. “I wanna say 'thank you' to all my fans around the world!” she writes. “I love you so much!”

Far From Ya Average releases new album “Stage Crasher...The LP”

The San Diego hip hop act known as Far From Ya Average has released their newest LP record album, “Stage Crasher...The LP.” The record includes 18 original tracks for a total of 75 minutes of heavy-hitting, top-quality listening time, making for an extremely comprehensive listening experience.

Far From Ya Average (often abbreviated FFYA) is very well named, as “Stage Crasher...The LP” clearly demonstrates. Music fans who may have been bored by the last 15 years of hip hop music, which has been repetitious and brutally over-produced by many standards, will be elated to discover this eclectic album by Far From Ya Average. The style and overall sound of “Stage Crasher...” is widely varied and entirely fun. Over the whole one-and-a-quarter hours, it is consistently full of catchy rhythms, brilliant rhymes, and ingenious melodies, and never once gets old.

Far From Ya Average's “Can You Handle This?” is a track that fuses rap with AC/DC-esque rock 'n' roll, the way the Beastie Boyz used to do. On the other hand, their “I'd Rather” song is delivered with the same aggressive confidence and tone of legendary artists such as Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. “Na Na Na,” a particularly upbeat and smile-inducing track, boasts fantastic indie pop elements balanced with a dash of Eminem's humor and groove. One could liken every track on the LP to a different mode of music without overlapping hardly at all. Whether the listener is a fan of hip hop or not, the uniqueness of FFYA's “Stage Crasher...” cannot be denied.

Their philosophy in making music explains their creative drive summarily. When asked about the message their album might carry to its listeners, they write, “You can do whatever you like. You do not have to think inside the box.”

At the core of Far From Ya Average is the remarkably talented trio, K-Rock, Stryve, and Def Shon, the former two being the founding members and Def Shon having been later adopted as a fellow Hypebomb Records artist. Many of their friends and associates are also featured on “Stage Crasher...,” and in the creation of this new LP, none of them were anywhere near that proverbial box.

“Stage Crasher...The LP” by Far From Ya Average is available online worldwide beginning March 26, 2013.

Mojo Mayne releases LP “Born 2 Do It”

Hip-hop veteran Mojo Mayne has released his newest LP album, titled “Born 2 Do It,” on the Sweat Hoggz Music Group record label. The long-playing record comprises 42 minutes of positively airborne hip-hop listening. In addition to nine hammer-heavy, white-hot and thumping original tracks, it includes the hit dance floor anthem, “Got Dat Body,” the single which immediately preceded the release of “Born 2 Do It” in early February of this year. Mojo Mayne's “Born 2 Do It” is truly an explosive record for midnight dance floors, but it is also a work of great artistic integrity that deserves listening on a personal basis.

[A more recent article concerning Mojo Mayne may be found here: http://www.parlemagazine.com/lifestyle/new-blood27/1764-mojo-mayne-the-pride-of-iowa]

This is perhaps best characterized in Mayne's song, “From Da Heart,” in which he raps:

“I've seen it with my eyes, felt it for myself. Haters want it all, they try to give me hell; I give 'em one for the streets, two for the fans, three for the love from the heart – here I am.”

The record is hip-hop with a heavy emphasis on Mayne's rhymes. Mayne raps like the honed professional he is atop an ocean of bass-booming back beats and backing vocals. This mix is accompanied by a whirl of additional instrumentation and orchestration that belies Mayne's own excellent and complex music tastes.

Among legends of the urban underground such as Jay-Z, Ludacris, Pharcyde and the Beastie Boyz, Mayne also lists a crew of artists from myriad other genres as main influences: Sinatra, Armstrong, Cooke; The Temptations, The Pointer Sisters, The Commodores; Smashing Pumpkins, Linkin Park, and Kings of Leon. It is partially this lush mix of sound that has produced Mojo Mayne.

Mainly, however, it is Mayne's determination and drive for perseverance in the face of adversity that authors his artistic goals.

“I would hope that this album would share a feeling of triumph over the tribulations that crush spirits and dreams,” says Mojo Mayne.

Mojo Mayne released an LP in 2011 titled “Street Voodoo” on SIMM / Sony Red Distribution. Mayne was also a member of the group Onetyme, which rocketed to popularity before being prematurely dismantled after an unfortunate turn of events in Mexico. Mayne managed to sell over 5,000 of their albums from the trunk of his car in order to salvage what was left of the situation. He later founded the popular Augusta music TV program, “The Unsigned.”

Mayne has toured in Atlanta, Augusta, Columbia, and Aiken, as well as in the southwest and other South Carolina locations. He has had relationships with Def Jam South in Atlanta and Octane Records in Phoenix.

“For me,” he writes, “my music has achieved the greatest success when it grabs someone who has been down and lifts them up, transforms them to their highest level of excellence.”

Mojo Mayne's own high level of excellence, encapsulated in “Born 2 Do It,” is available online everywhere March 26, 2013.

Voltage Black releases newest EP “We, the Obsolete”

London based digital music artists Voltage Black have released their newest EP, “We, the Obsolete.” The EP is a comprehensive treatment of their first single from their debut album, which is due out in September. The EP contains three iterations of “We, the Obsolete,” beginning with the official, standard release of the single, and followed by the “Ph03nix Remix” and “Singularity Edit.” These versions are each different enough to stand alone as an entirely individual song, and the EP comprises approximately 14 minutes of continual listening time as a result. The music fan would be mistaken to imagine that listening to this Voltage Black EP from start to finish would be like hearing a track on repeat. This is entirely not the case.

Voltage Black is, at its heart, studio musician and composer Ewan Fisher, who when performing live is joined by percussionist James Milton. The tone and general experience of Voltage Black is, in their own words, “unified by an aesthetic of layered psychedelic experimentalism.” To hear the record is to understand their aim in this. The music comes in and out like breeze, and rhythms are alive more than simply background. Fisher's choice of instrumentation is eclectic, surprising, and genuinely original, rather than simply an attempt at being unique or unorthodox.

They name as inspirations an unlikely grab bag of names and muses. Listing their main influences, Voltage Black writes, “Experimentation, wonky old tape sounds, Warp Records artists, Bjork, '90s and '00s post rock, Arthur Russell, Liars….” If this list provides only a vague idea of what music might be produced using these inspirations as a template, it is perhaps because “We, the Obsolete” is the furthest thing from derivative. They throw everything that sounds good into the mix, and don't spend any time trimming out the excess.

“Maximalism is a force for good,” says Voltage Black.

Brainyboxer releases self-titled debut EP

Paris-based folk 'n' rock band Brainyboxer has released their self-titled debut EP. The extended-play release comprises five original tracks from the eclectic group, who are a singer-guitarist, a pianist, and a violinist from Australia and England, respectively. Though this core, acoustic trio forms the soul and principal force of Brainyboxer, their “Brainyboxer” EP features backing instruments such as drum and percussion, cellos, horns, electric bass and guitars, and more. The EP also features the production and musical talents of Benoit Portolano, from sensational Parisian band, Blackfeet Revolution.

The warm, natural sound of Brainyboxer is part folk music, part indie rock, and part traditional piano bar, with just a dash of pop thrown in for good measure. Singer Roderic croons and trills like a beautiful and ingenious cross between Rob Dickenson of Catherine Wheel and Rhett Miller of Old 97s. Violinist Ruth plays with powerful undercurrents of passion that often steal the spotlight in spite of her delicate restraint and subtlety. Pianist Peter accounts for much of the unlikely, gorgeous 19th century feel Brainyboxer boasts. Although their EP is entirely modern in terms of production and delivery, their music has deep wild-west saloon overtones mixed with a certain Paris burlesque, circa 1890.

Among the best qualities of the “Brainyboxer” EP is an expressive, clear and earnest humanity their music communicates. Its ambiance, lyrics and composition thrum with an endearing goodness that cannot be faked, and which pervades the band's character in general. Their website, which showcases their debut music video from the EP, also has a direct chat line to the band members, themselves, who promise to get back to you at their earliest convenience (URL below). Their photos are unassuming and unpretentious, and they've even made a video from their first live performance available – a gesture so open and neighborly to fans that it's impossible not to fall in love with them having seen it.

In short, Brainyboxer is one of the precious few bands that keeps the future of music bright and hopeful, and their debut, self-titled EP is a work of fine, fine musical art that will leave a little empty space in the musical heart of anyone who misses out on it.

This small tragedy is entirely unnecessary, however. “Brainyboxer” by Brainyboxer is available online worldwide beginning March 30, 2013.

European music artist x2Proton releases remastered LP edition of “Outerspace Odyssey II”

The digital music artist known as x2Proton has released his newest official LP album, “Outerspace Odyssey II (Remastered Edition).” The record contains 11 original tracks spanning a full 55 minutes worth of excellent playing time, each of them as looming and cosmic as the Milky Way itself. This remarkable remastered edition of “Outerspace Odyssey II” is full of 1970s era beeps and bloops, like those that once emitted from the gigantic, earliest computers, and it is impossible to avoid the feeling of being inside an archaic space capsule floating through the universe while listening. X2Proton's “Outerspace Odyssey II” is clearly one of the most amazing, interesting, engaging and fun works of digital music to come from the industry in decades.

For an example of dark ambient music, one could do no better than the remastered edition of “Outerspace Odyssey II.” It is as magnificent in terms of spaciousness as it is in terms of eeriness, with an overwhelming feeling of enormity and emptiness throughout all. X2Proton is a master of persistent echo and negative presence, making the album something that must be experienced more than merely listened to. It functions perfectly well as background listening, but has more than enough meat for an intent listener to digest from moment to moment.

X2Proton is the brainchild and work of the famous Laurent Boudic, who has been composing analogue “electro-industrial” music since the 1980s, when the genre first surfaced in a widespread form. He has powered with his endlessly creative mind many well-known projects, such as Novo, DeNovo, Genetik System, and of course, x2Proton, x2Proton being his incarnation for producing what is known as dark ambient and electronica. Originally involved with synthetic punk rock music, he switched to more electronic sounds in order to have more structure in his music. Since that early time, he has released albums on world-famous electronica labels such as Germany's PSI49net, headed by the infamous Anthony Rother, Black Montanas Records in the United States, Canadian-based Suction Records, and Sony Music's French subdivision, Distance Records.

“Outerspace Odyssey II (Remastered Edition)” by x2Proton is available worldwide beginning March 24, 2013.

The creators of house music known simply as Gambler`s Club have released their newest and most powerful extended play record, titled, “Higher Off the Ground.” The EP album contains six original tracks over 30 minutes of playing time, the theme of the album being Gambler's Club's capital new single release, “Higher Off the Ground.”

“Higher Off the Ground” is a high-powered, high-energy dance track that has all the best qualities and features that fans of digital music have come to expect from Sweden's burgeoning underground dance scene since the early 1990s. “Higher Off...” is an excellent example of everything that has ever been fun and exciting about house music, from its unstoppable beat to the exquisite and catchy vocals, and from the entrancing synthesizer chords to the mesmerizing reverb and other effects. It is full of colorful light, youth, and verve, and deserves a place in every DJ's CD stack.

Besides the original mix of “Higher Off the Ground,” the EP also includes a “Radio Edit,” the “Phunk!T Mix,” the “Patrick PJ Remix,” the “Oscar D'vine Remix,” and a gorgeous acoustic version that closes out the series with a surprising amount of emotion and sonorousness. These tracks give a round and thorough treatment of the main song, “Higher Off the Ground,” and each remix is a unique scene with a great amount of variety among the different perspectives, each with its own timbre and mood.

Gambler's Club (Oscar D'vine and Patrick PJ) are veteran musicians with nearly two decades of experience as writers of music. They name among their important influences artists such as Avicci, Swedish House Mafia, and Skrillex. They have performed with a broad array of artists and do not stay within a single subgenre of music, writing instead across a broad spectrum that includes electro-house, pop, dubstep, and more.

Their “Higher Off the Ground” EP is available online worldwide.

St. Louis rap artist Beef releases official LP “Beef Presents: Warrior 4 Life: Da Album”

Beef, a hardcore rapper from the north side of St. Louis, has released his premier LP record, “Beef Presents: Warrior 4 Life: Da Album.” The album is an extremely high-value offering from Beef, whose “Warrior 4 Life...” spans an impressive 18 professional and original tracks, none of them remixes from old material, nor remixes of songs on the same release. This chain of urban creativity contains a full 71 minutes of playing time, making it one of the most comprehensive rap releases this year has seen to date, perhaps above all others.

Beef's sound is tough and full of bass tones, his voice sounding sometimes like Dr. Dre, and sometimes like Ice Cube, but always raw and unpolished with studio effects like autotune or other such frills that get in the way of contemporary, pure and true poetry of the street. Beef's themes are entirely direct and mature, also, the record receiving an “Explicit Lyrics” tag for all but a handful of tracks. He discusses the trials and tribulations of having not enough for one's own safety and security on a regular basis, the struggle for life in the modern era, life's beauties and horrors, and many other topics familiar to the various hip-hop subgenres. Make no mistake, however – Beef's “Warrior 4 Life: Da Album” is not a hip-hop record. It is straight-up rap, right from the heart.

Beef got his start in the music industry building music studios. He was inspired to create music (and remains so) by the harsh realities of life, from which many of his lyrics are born. His record holds a message of strength in the face of adversity. “If you're born poor,” Beef writes, “first pray. Stay focused, and give your enemies hell. By any means, stay alive and get monuz!” [sic].

Beef gives thanks to God in his bio, too, though his life has been anything but easy. “First of all,” he says, “I love the Lord because without his help I wouldn't have come this far with my music, you know. And second, I damn sure love the money! I've been poor all my life, strugglin' to survive. I really don't have too much to say. [I'm] just a nigga born and raised in the north side of St. Louis to a [screwed]-up family, and I pray that one day the Lord will give me one good blessing before I die.”

Beef's blessing for the underground rap community is available online worldwide March 20, 2013.

Starflight releases new single “Phasers on Stun”

The emerging music geniuses known as Starflight have released their newest official single, “Phasers on Stun.” The single is from their up and coming LP titled, “Adventure Beyond.” It features a post-disco pop beat, synthesized instruments in the neon styles of 1980, and vocals that are as catchy and heartwarming as they are fun. Fun is at the very core of Starflight's introductory single, and if it is any indication of what “Adventure Beyond” will be, then fans of creative dance music have something exciting and wonderful to look forward to.

“Phasers on Stun” is a work of great talent on many levels, the most obvious being instrumentally and vocally – the members of Starflight (Jib Khan and Damien Spanjer) have impeccable ears for pitch, timbre, and harmony – but the real genius is in their songwriting. Although “Phasers on Stun” is inspired by the popular music of thirty-plus years ago, Starflight does not sound like any band from that era in particular. Their vocals have much in common with The Beach Boys, though, and the music from Michael Jackson's “Captain EO” comes to mind for its atmosphere in general. The cosmic effects that laser throughout their track are reminiscent of ELO's records. In other words, Starflight is producing music that has much in common with some of music's most excellent writers.

This is part of what drives Starflight to make music in this incredibly unique way, as opposed to the humdrum, mindless tracks churned out by today's music industry for play at seedy nightclubs. When asked what prompted them to begin writing and performing, Jib Khan writes, “[It was] hairs going up on the back of my neck while listening to certain songs on the radio. I wanted to recreate that.”

Recreating that means dialing back the clock to a time when music was something more than an image, a sound that meant more than what its performers looked like. Starflight writes in their bio that they have a “mutual fondness for pop music of the pre-MTV era, when songwriting was a master craft, hooks were aplenty, and you didn’t have to wax your chest to appear in the video clip.”

“Phasers on Stun” represents more than an image, too; it's the beginning of a new, modern life for a revived sound and principle. Put simply, Starflight means music like you remember it.

Sade Serena releases new single “Tonight”

Hip-hop and pop singer Sade Serena has released her latest flagship single and accompanying video, “Tonight,” to wide fan and critical acclaim. The song is a powerhouse pop single with much more than it takes to get a nightclub's dance floor airborne. With a thumping, whumping back beat driving electric guitars and classic synth chords beneath the glorious, crystalline soprano voice of Serena, herself, “Tonight” is clearly just the first release in a long line of vivacious and mesmerizing albums to come.

The “Tonight” video, which was directed by Bobby Viera and produced by Russell Lafreneire, shot on-location in Los Angeles, CA, showcases Serena to be a classy, sultry chanteuse with a penchant for living life to the fullest. Looking like a elegant and sassy cross between Gwen Stefani and a young Halle Berry, Serena instantly proves herself as charismatic on the screen as she is enchanting when soaring from stereo speakers.

Sade Serena, who got her start performing professionally in Florida, has recently come under the wing of Uprize Music Management, who has overseen the awaited release of “Tonight” on Def Jam Digital Distribution. With her career ready to skyrocket at a moment's notice (and very likely without notice altogether), Serena still maintains a humble and somewhat humanistic perspective of her art.

“My music has to capture those moments in your mind that make you feel happy and confident in the real you,” she has said, an insight into her proud bearing that one can't help but be entranced by while watching her video. “I want to be a storyteller and spread love with my music. I also want to be teacher and share my lessons with my listeners.”

It is much to Serena's credit that she can be so truly excellent at her craft and keep such laudable goals in mind. If “Tonight” is any indication – which it cannot fail to be – Serena will have an awfully large audience to love and teach in a very near future.

Composers Jim Carroll and Chris George release triple LP “Cinematic Soundtracks – Epic Themes... 1-3”

Musicians Jim Carroll and Chris George have released their appropriately titled collection of theme music on an epic scale, “Cinematic Soundtracks – Epic Themes For Movies, Vol. 1 – 3.” The trilogy of volumes literally includes scores of scores, the first volume alone containing 18 full-length tracks, for an approximate total of an hour's worth of excellent listening. The wholly instrumental, entirely original compositions are capable of evoking every emotion in the human spectrum, and the myriad variations Carroll and George have included in these albums stagger the music fan's comprehension.

The word “epic” is so well suited to the task of describing Carroll and George's work that the listener can see the sheer scope of their music in his mind's eye, simply by reading titles from Vol. 1: “City Under Siege;” “A Hero's Promise;” “Conversing With God / Redemption;” and “Funeral for a Friend / Payback” are some of the more exciting examples. Among the most vivifying and compelling themes contained in Vol. 1 (which exemplifies the collection as well as Vol. 2 or 3 might) are the frightening and blackly heroic “Dark Pirates,” and the heart-filling “A Soldier's Return.” “Avenging Heroes” demonstrates Carroll and George's familiarity and godlike strength with the strings section, while “Heroes of the Arena” and “Ivan the Terrible” do the same for the electric guitar, as well as showing their versatility in choosing instrumentation.

These songs are not (as yet) employed as the background score to any feature film, and the musical philosophy underlying Carroll and George's “Cinematic Soundtracks...” is to place the emphasis on the music, itself, as a compelling art form that well-deserves its own share of spotlight without being inordinately thrown into the “background,” as such, of some other spectacle.

This is a wonderful development in music appreciation, as fans of cinema soundtracks are often scorned by music collectors as having a taste for something disingenuous or benign, not realizing that music orchestrated for cinema makes up the largest portion of contemporary classical music. Composers such as John Williams and Ennio Morricone, whose most famous works arguably overshadow even the classic films for which they were written, stand as irrefutable proof that the art of scoring music with a scene in mind is one of humanity's finest musical endeavors, and Carroll and George's “Cinematic Soundtracks...” is a marvelous piece of evidence for the same.

“Film music, without the film,” write the creative duo, “is music for the imagination. It tells a narrative much like program music in the classical field. Our music fires one’s imagination with visions of large-scale action scenes, heartfelt drama, sweeping romance, and other genres of the silver screen.” They punctuate their artistic principles with a single afterthought: “It is more than just background music, though. It is an experience.”

Jim Carroll and Chris George's “Cinematic Soundtracks – Epic Themes... 1-3” is available online worldwide beginning March 16, 2013.

Philadelphia rapper Zaire releases LP “Warrior King”

The rap artist known as Zaire has released his tall-standing flagship LP, titled, “Warrior King.” The album is a collection of nine original tracks written, composed, and performed by Zaire, himself. The digital record features state of the art beats, mixing, and engineering, as well as rhythm and rhyme in the modern classic tradition of the urban underground. This combination is accompanied also by gorgeous melody lines played on a variety of synthesized instruments such as keyboard, organ, and piano.

Zaire's “Warrior King” is a record that comes straight from the heart and soul of a true American poet in the prime of his life. Some of Zaire's themes are indicative of a man celebrating the beauty and splendor of living life to the fullest, while others point to a more introspective, even romantic music artist. In this way, Zaire is capable of writing (and rapping) about scenarios all across the emotional spectrum. One line, from his appropriately titled, “Life Short,” shows his levity of spirit: “Life's too short, you only live once, take a couple shots, live how you want...” In another, far more melancholy track called “Love Taps,” the sorrowful chorus chimes out: “You said last time, was your last time, I'm thinkin' 'last time, you said that last time' – loving you is walking on a landmine.”

Needless to say, Zaire's “Warrior King” is powerful, fun, exciting, and at times extremely moving in ways many music fans will not yet have experienced from a hip-hop album.

This is perhaps due to Zaire's personal life, which once involved growing up hard in the infamous Richard Allen projects area. The Richard Allen was also the home of Bill Cosby and his friend, Fat Albert, but these are the only funny parts of its history. Richard Allen Homes displaced more people than it housed, actually destroying hundreds of occupied row homes as well as the existing African American neighborhood down 11th Street. Zaire's own history is looking up, however, as he is the proud founder and CEO of the Foreva Young company, as well as the artist of this extremely talented record.

“The message my album shares with its listeners is to always believe in yourself, and enjoy life,” says Zaire.

Zaire's full-length digital album, “Warrior King,” is available online worldwide.

Spaceship Days releases new EP “The Thrill of Freefall”

Alternative pop-rock band Spaceship Days has released their newest EP, “The Thrill of Freefall.” The extended-play album is a collection of the band's most polished work and has a modest playing time of approximately 20 minutes, making it the most important official release by Spaceship Days to date. It is the third publicly available SD release, the second being their widely acclaimed LP, “Black Holes and Butterflies.”

Spaceship Days, which is based in the Chapel Hill area of North Carolina, garnered the Best Pop Artist in the St. Helier Cider Online Music Awards in 2011, as well as being awarded the title of Best Pop Act from Los Angeles' own Artists in Music competition. Their “Black Holes...” LP turned heads all across the country, which is part of what makes “The Thrill of Freefall” so exciting; the new EP serves as an introduction of their impeccably precise and clarion new vocalist, Adam Lee Decker of “American Idol” and “America's Got Talent” fame, and includes the best singles from their lauded second record along with some entirely new material.

The style and sound of Spaceship Days are a well-needed return to the early and mid- nineties, that last era in music before digital engineering made it possible for anyone to record an album through the use of believable synthetic instrumentation (for those without the ability to play an instrument), and autotune (for vocalists without the ability to sing in key). A breath of clean air in today's sullied musical atmosphere, Spaceship Days is honest alternative rock music driven by drums, bass, and keyboard, a guitar carefully gilded with reverb, and a singer with a crystal-clear voice who never waxes showy or pretentious.

Spaceship Days' sound, which varies in terms of mood and tone, but not quality, hearkens to some of the most loved bands of the pre-digital age. They name as main influences the much-underrated Catherine Wheel, as well as Radiohead, Blue October, U2, and others. Among this marinade their songwriting has perhaps kept the characteristics of Catherine Wheel and U2 best – a very, very good thing (and listen for that stupifyingly excellent, Catherine-Wheel inspired guitar in “Hanging from the Satellites,” too) – but their immediate sonic flavor has more in common with bands whose composition styles differ from their own.

Their vocal lines are occasionally reminiscent of the untouchable Tears for Fears, for instance, a likeness that is audible in the EP's opening track, “December,” and to a lesser degree in “Shadow Walking.” The general groove of bands like The Goo Goo Dolls and Keane is also ever-present, albeit with Spaceship Days' unique and individual spin. The all-natural ingredients of “The Thrill of Freefall” are healthy for every music fan's ear, therefore, and if it may be supposed that there's a full-length record from SD on the way, then now's the perfect time to start listening.

King Piff releases new EP “Loud Pack Music”

Brooklyn rap artist King Piff has released his newest EP record, titled, “Loud Pack Music.” The album features six original tracks over approximately 18 minutes of playing time, and serves as a fine introduction to King Piff for music fans who may not yet be acquainted with him. These tracks each carry the infamous “Parental Advisory, Explicit Lyrics” sticker, which is appropriate for Piff, an artist who takes an especial interest in freedom of speech.

This is at least partially because Panama-born King Piff's mind is a well-oiled machine, and he is an artist with much to say. Luckily for fans of the hip-hop genre, he says all of it with rap, and his taste in rap is excellent. Among his most important influences, Piff names legends such as Nas, Tupac Shakur, The Notorious BIG, Ice Cube and KRS-1, all of whom are indispensable musicians. However, Piff's original inspirations to music are names associated with some of the best and most seminal hip-hop records, names which most rap fans have long neglected.

“I got started in music when I heard L.L. Cool J's 'Rock the Bells,'” writes King Piff, “and 'La Di Da Di' by Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh.”

Most of Piff's themes on “Loud Pack Music” revolve around the ganja, and this is consistent with his personal philosophy about honesty in public. King Piff does his best to give people permission to speak their minds. In fact, the human mind is something Piff takes very seriously in general.

“The lead track...” Piff says, “is basically about my love for marijuana, the way it opens my third eye and allows me to meditate and heal. I want people to feel like it's OK to speak on their beliefs.”

Freedom of thought and speech are only two of his concerns, though. At the heart of King Piff's new EP is the love of old-school rap. “I’m bringing that real hip-hop back,” he explains, “where you had to be able to captivate the audience and tell stories.”

“Loud Pack Music” has a simple, yet beautiful message for Piff's fans, also, one that any music fan would do well to heed. “It’s cool to reach for the stars and your dreams,” Piff relates, “as well as to listen to your inner voice for reason.”

The hip-hop global populace can listen to King Piff's inner voice as recorded on “Loud Pack Music” when it is released online worldwide mid-March, 2013. Listen also for King Piff's music as featured in the upcoming HBO film, “The Cross Bearer.”

Bounce on Deck releases LP “All That and Some”

New Jersey hip-hop artist Bounce on Deck has released his latest LP album, titled, “All That and Some.” The record includes 17 original tracks in a full hour's worth of some of the hardest, some of the most raw, explicit and honest rap music ever recorded. Bounce on Deck's record contains themes that range from 'banging and growing up in the rough, urban sprawl of the East Coast, to garnering cash and loving attention from female acquaintances. In the end, however, Bounce (also popularly known as J Bounce) has the music at heart on “All That and Some.” In fact, he has always taken the music to heart.

“At the age of 15,” he relates, “my grandmother died. Instead of attending the funeral, I wrote poems to her.” This poetic streak in him has not been easy to fulfill, either. “All That and Some” is an album about “the hard struggles of growing up in the streets and still trying to chase your dreams,” Bounce writes.

He names as major influences the legendary likes of Tupac Shakur, The Notorious BIG, Jay Z, and Nas, but these are only his musical influences. J Bounce is also an independent film maker.

Bounce, who is a native of Plainfield, NJ, began a private DVD company he called Industry in da Streets. It officially opened for business in 2006. Three years later, his “Industry in da Streets Documentary” was released, a musical documentary that includes live concert footage and artist interviews.
His contemporary hip-hop effort is another album called “Know Dat, the Mixtape,” which will be followed by an autobiographical film of the same name. With all this talent, all signs point to Bounce on Deck's having a very long and ingenious career.

“All That and Some” is available online worldwide beginning mid-March, 2013.
